Wombat Hill, a significant topographical feature within the Hepburn Shire landscape is the home of the Wombat Hill Botanic Garden. In 1884 a plan for the garden was completed by prominent Melbourne-based garden designer William Sangster (1830-1910). Subsequent Conservation Management and Masterplans have sought to interpret, conserve and develop upon Sangster’s vision, whilst acknowledging the prominence of existing water infrastructure such as the Day Basin (1882) and water reservoir (c. 1880’s, now covered).

GbLA Landscape Architects have prepared a landscape design for the Day Basin and Forecourt that seeks to acknowledge the importance of the heritage setting balanced with the need for a more prominent and safe entry point to the Garden. A new carved stone rill water feature and garden surrounding the now empty Day Basin brings to life a new collection based on the importance of water in supporting plant life and the local spring-dependant ecosystems.
