GbLA Landscape Architects with City of Boroondara developed a Canopy Replacement Plan and Arboretum to offset potential tree losses within the municipality as a result of North East Link project works. A site-specific matrix was developed that considered location of Council assets, existing tree canopy extent, age and useful life expectancy. The matrix and associated plans identified possible new tree planting locations that also took into consideration the resilience of future tree species under a warming climate scenario, Council policies on access to shade and amenity.
The Boroondara Arboretum located adjacent to the Eastern Freeway utilises existing topography and covered drainage systems to create a unique setting and present Forest types such as the ‘Flooded Forest’ typically found along Australian rivers and water courses. Other forests types such as the Floral Forest focus on Australia’s unique Acacia trees and the Food and Dwarf Forests highlight the importance and diversity of trees.
